DOCTRINE OF COVENANTS
  1. The Biblical word covenant, trIb. berith; diaqh,kh, diatheke, is a disposition made by the party of the first part (God) in favor of the party of the second part (man).
  2. The Edenic Covenant, Gen.1,2, included:
    1. Perfect environment, Gen.2:8.
    2. Perfect food and perfect eye stimulation, Gen.2:9.
    3. Perfect weather under the canopy, Gen.1:6,7; 3:8.
    4. Perfect sex, Gen.2:21-25.
    5. Bible class everyday, Gen.3:8; 1:26,27.
    6. The test of volition and the two trees, Gen.2:9,16,17.
    7. Man rejected the Edenic Covenant.
  3. The Adamic Covenant, Gen.3.
    1. It was necessitated by the fall. Spiritual death was incapable of fellowship with God.
    2. God cursed the instrument of deception.
    3. The Angelic Conflict overflowed into human history, Gen.3:15.
    4. There was a new test of volition (the Cross), Gen.3:15.
    5. There was judgment on the woman (pain in child bearing, subjection to the man with an old sin nature).
    6. There was a curse on the earth.
    7. There was expulsion from Eden.
  4. The Noahic Covenant, Gen.9.
    1. It was related to the destruction of antediluvian civilization.
    2. There was the command to repopulate planet earth, Gen.9:1.
    3. Animal flesh was given as food, Gen.24.
    4. Capital punishment was punishment for murder, Gen.9:5,6.
    5. This covenant included the promise that God would never again send a universal flood.
    6. The rainbow is its sign.
  5. The Abrahamic Covenant, Gen.12:13.
    1. It was contingent on the maturity status of Abraham and Sarah, Gen.17:16,15.
    2. It was based on their sexual prosperity in maturity.
    3. It includes a promise (Gen.22) of:
      1. A nation.
      2. A Messianic descendant.
      3. Racial and spiritual descendants.
      4. Real estate.
      5. A city, Heb.11:10.
    4. Blessing by association is included.
    5. It is fulfilled at the Second Advent.
  6. The Mosaic Covenant, Ex.20; Lev.; Deut.
    1. It was for Israel only.
    2. It authorized the Levitical priesthood.
    3. It included the tabernacle.
    4. It included national discipline.
    5. It was fulfilled by the Lord Jesus Christ at the First Advent.
    6. It was not given to the Church.
  7. The Davidic Covenant, 2Sam.7:816; Ps.89; Jer.33:22-26.
    1. It established rulership in David's house.
    2. His dynasty is perpetuated forever.
    3. His greater son (the Lord Jesus Christ) would fulfill it.
  8. - The New Covenant to Israel, Jer.31:31-34.
    1. It is to be made in the Millennium.
    2. It is based on regeneration and maturity.
    3. It is related to the Cross.
    4. It includes the universal indwelling of the Holy Spirit, Ezek.36:27.
    5. There is a promise of great material prosperity, Jer.32:41; Isa.61:8; Ezek.34:25-27.
  9. The New Covenant to the Church, Heb.9:15; 10:29; 12:24; Mt.26:28; Mk.14-24; Lk.22:20; 1Cor.11:25; 2Cor.3:6.
    1. It is based on the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
    2. It authorized a royal priesthood.
    3. It includes the universal indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
    4. It is commemorated in the Lord's Table.
    5. It is fulfilled in both time and eternity.
