DOCTRINE OF REPENTANCE
  1. God is said to repent in:
    1. Gen.6:6,7: God changing His policy; ~x;n", nacham.
    2. Amos.7:3,6.
    3. Ex.32:14.
    4. Judg.2:18.
    5. 1Sam.15:35.
    6. Ps.90:13.
    7. Jer.15:6; 42:10.
  2. Since God is immutable, He cannot change His mind. Therefore, we have an anthropopathism.
  3. Greek versus King James version.
    1. Metanoe,w, metanoeo: change your mind, repent; translated repent.
    2. Metame,llomai, metamellomai: change your emotion, regret; translated repent.
  4. Since metanoe,w (metanoeo) and ~x;n" (nacham) are transitive verbs, both must have a subject and object either stated or implied. Therefore, the subject changes his mind about the object.
    1. In Phase 1, the sinner is the subject and Christ is the object.
    2. In Phase 2, the believer is the subject and Bible Doctrine is the object.
  5. The verses where metanoe,w (metanoeo) is used in salvation, Mk.1:15; Mt.12:24,41; Lk.13:3,5; 15:7,10; 16:30,31; Act.17:30; 20:21; 26;20; Heb.12:17; 2Pet.3:9.
  6. Salvation repentance, therefore, is a triangle of mental attitude concerning Christ, and is the same as faith in Christ, and is caused by the illuminating ministry of the Holy Spirit, 2Tim.2:25.
  7. Metanoe,w (metanoeo) is used with believer's in Phase 2 in the following areas:
    1. Human good; dead works, Heb.6:1.
    2. Reversion recovery, Rev.2:5,16,22; 3:19; 2Cor.12:20.
    3. Recovery from carnality, 2Cor.12:21.
  8. The word metame,llomai (metamellomai) is mistranslated "repent", but means "regret", Mt.21:29,32; 27:3; 2Cor.7:8; Heb.7:21; Rom.11:29. Regretting has NO spiritual benefits for the believer or unbeliever.
    1. Regret of previous action.
    2. Emotional revolt.
    3. God has no regrets, Rom.11:29.
    4. The Father, Heb.7:21.
    5. No regret for exercising the Pastor-Teacher's authority, Rom.24; Act.20:21.
  9. Areas of regret, 2Cor.7:8.
    1. The believer should have no regrets regarding previous thoughts or actions, Mt.21:29,32.
    2. Judas regretted under emotional revolt but went to hell, Mt.27:3.
    3. God has no regrets at saving man, Rom.11:29.
    4. The Father has no regrets about Christ's high priesthood, Heb.7:21.
    5. The apostle Paul had no regrets, 2Cor.7:8,9.
